What if your idea has "known" components-- can you still file for a patent?

In our latest Question of the Week video, we discussed the trends in global patents. This time around, we will help you to move forward with an idea that has "known" components.

What is innovation? In terms of patents, your idea has to be new and inventive. But, even if your idea is a new and revolutionary one, it still probably has known elements and components. Thankfully, it doesn’t matter because in terms of patents, an idea is innovative if the known components are combined in an innovative way.

For example, smart watches are not a new invention, but Apple patented them first, combining already known elements in an innovative way. Does your idea have that “wow” factor? The combination of how you combine the parts can’t be a simple addition of known features. Surprising innovation makes your idea patentable, even if there are already known components contained within it.
