What are the patent claims?

Patent claims are definitive areas which your patent covers. Patent claims are the foundation of your patent — they define the uniqueness of your idea.

  • Patent claims are useful when you encounter a patent infringement. Based on the predefined patent claims, you can claim the novelty of your idea, and defend it on the court.

  • You can add more claims on-the-go.

  • You have to group your claims into categories. Patent claims are very strict legal definitions, you have to be precise when defining patent claims.

Our advice is that you seek professional help when applying for a patent, especially when you are defining your patent claims. Without claims, or with incorrectly added claims, your patent application won’t get approval.
