What are the patent categories?

During the patent application process, you have to categorize your innovation into different patent categories and sections.

  • Each patent is categorized into three different categories, which are, as of now: chemical, engineering, electronic & electrical engineering.

  • Within the main categories, patents are further segmented into sections and classes. Sections use alphabet letters to categorize, classes use numbers for the same reason.

Patent categories, sections, and classes are helpful to organize patents into databases. These databases are made public, and helpful for patent searches.
