Dentists as innovators

I think dentists like yourself are natural innovators!

You have the perfect opportunity every day to see what tools you need to make your lives, and the lives of your patients, better. You’ve been blessed with perfect careers to be innovative because you can test and improve your processes and inventions fairly quickly and on a daily basis.

I’ve seen tons of dentists go from idea to prototype and finally to making a business out of their ideas. Some of them have even set up their own companies!

Let’s check out some examples.

Dr. Robert Ibsen DDS and DenMat Holdings LLC

Dr. Robert always had a desire to create multifunctional dental materials to meet his patients’ needs. He started in private practice and, while doing so, started thinking that his job would be better if he had dental materials that were multifunctional.

He founded DenMat, teamed up with a chemist, and soon, many of his ideas started to turn into tangible things.

Soon, it was not only him and his practice who used those innovative solutions but also other oral health professionals started to get interested!

This meant that the company he set up had to grow, hire more people, and keep on the innovation track, creating a lot of popular and highly used products in the oral health industry by developing products for restorative as well as cosmetic dentistry, such as the well-known Rembrandt® products. Fun fact: Rembrandt® was acquired by Gillette® in 2004!

Finally, after years of innovation, Dr. Ibsen sold his company and got back to his private practice.

His legacy of innovation and creativity still lives in every product thousands of dentists use in their practice!

Dr. Daniel Kim DDS and ContacEZ Interproximal Solution

Dr. Kim always had an eye toward better dentistry — he has invented tons of precision dental devices.

You might be familiar with the Super Plugger because it’s very popular, well, he invented it! Like the true innovator he is, Dr. Kim has numerous patents and often contributes to dental journals and periodicals.

In October of 2006, ContacEZ was launched to provide access to all of Dr. Kim’s inventions to dentists everywhere. One of their most popular products is the ContacEZ Diamond Dental Strip to achieve interproximal relief. This simple yet effective invention eliminates the need for articulating films and rotary instruments when dentists are adjusting the proximal contact of restorations.

With only a quick visit to ContacEZ’s website, you’ll find information about the problems they solve, along with explanations of how to use them. This only proves how interested they are in improving dental health care overall!

Dr. Dan Fischer DDS and Ultradent

What do you do when you need a product to do your work in an optimal way but it doesn’t exist?

You invent it, of course!

Or at least, that’s what Dr. Fischer did, when he realized that rapid, profound hemostasis was important to have successful dental operations.

He used his experience, creativity, time, and even his own blood, to test his efforts, finally inventing a product that would control bleeding and sulcular fluid, the Astringedent®. This product was so successful that it led to Ultradent, which kept creating new products!

Ultradent’s philosophy is to help professionals practice minimally invasive dentistry. Dr. Fischer still works with patients, which gets his mind working on new ideas and confirm how much his inventions and the products developed by Ultradent help patients.

Oh, and also, Dr. Fischer hopes that one day he’ll invent a cure for caries… imagine a world with a cure for caries!

In the meantime, he’s happy to have numerous patents under his name.
